A student team from the Wentworth Institute of Technology Sweeney Programs of Construction Management recently earned two major awards at the 2025 Canstruction Boston Awards Ceremony, held at the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) on Atlantic Wharf.
This year, more than 45 Wentworth Construction Management students participated in the annual design-build competition, with the Wentworth Construction Management (CM) Club organizing and overseeing the university’s involvement. The eight-member build team was led by Mia Zoghbi, Carson Roberge, and Cristian Sciaudone, included team members Chase Chaprales, Harry Pierce, Anthony Gentile, Nina Minich, and Delhery Diaz, along with faculty advisor Michael D’Agostino, Program Administrator for the Sweeney Programs of Construction Management.
The Wentworth team was recognized with the People’s Choice Award, receiving an impressive 2,661 votes, and the Social Media Soup-er Star Award, generating 10,443 social media impressions.
“Canstruction Boston is an incredible opportunity for our students to apply their classroom learning to a real-world project that benefits the community,” said D’Agostino. “Their teamwork, creativity, and passion for helping others reflect the very best of the Sweeney Programs of Construction Management and the spirit of Wentworth.”
Canstruction Boston is a charitable competition that brings together architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and students to create elaborate structures using canned goods and other non-perishable food items—without adhesives.
Since its inception in 2011, the event has donated over 600,000 pounds of food to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, supporting efforts to combat food insecurity across the region.
This year’s theme, “Games,” inspired Wentworth’s students to recreate Red, the iconic character from the well-known Angry Birds game. Their sculpture stood over seven feet tall, used 934 cans, and was constructed in approximately three hours after weeks of preparation, design, and practice builds on campus.
The 2025 Canstruction Boston event featured 13 teams, including participants from Annum Architects, Arup, CUBE 3, L.A. Fuess Partners, McNamara Salvia, Nitsch Engineering, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, SmithGroup, SMMA, TYLin, Wilson Butler Architects, and South Coast Improvement Company. Together, the teams collected 34,693 cans and food items, all of which will be donated to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, which serves more than 71,000 individuals each month.
“Community impact is at the heart of what we do,” D’Agostino added. “We are proud that our students are not only developing as construction professionals but also as citizens who use their skills to make a difference.”
