From Meredith to Mission Hill: Wentworth's First Applied AI Student

Ben Abromowich did not come to Wentworth to follow a trend. He came to build something.

A sophomore from Meredith, New Hampshire, Abromowich has become a milestone in the university’s story as the first student to officially enroll in Wentworth’s new Bachelor of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence.

But that moment didn’t happen by accident. It was the result of years of curiosity, hands-on experimentation, and a search for a program that matched the way he already thought about the future.

Before Applied AI had a name on his schedule, Abromowich entered into to a different academic program. But throughout high school, he kept exploring AI on his own, drawn to the technology’s ability to solve problems in ways that felt both powerful and practical.

Then he saw the announcement: Wentworth was launching a degree in Applied Artificial Intelligence.

“It really seemed like a no-brainer for me,” Abromowich said of his decision to switch majors. “I’m excited to expand my knowledge and skills in this field.”

Learning AI the Wentworth Style

For Abromowich, the appeal is not simply the subject matter, but the way he will learn it. He chose Wentworth for its hands-on, career-connected approach, and he’s eager to apply that mindset to a field that’s moving fast and touching nearly every industry.

“I’m particularly excited about using AI to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives, and to advance technology in general,” he said. “I’m especially interested in healthcare applications, but I’m also eager to explore how AI can improve processes and create solutions across different industries.”

That blend of practical training paired with real-world outcomes is exactly what drew him to the program.

Applied AI at Wentworth is designed to prepare students not only to understand the technology, but also to build with it—developing models, engineering solutions, and making thoughtful decisions about how AI is used in the world.

Preparing for What’s Next

Abromowich sees the major as a smart investment in a workforce that’s changing in real time. As more organizations integrate AI into everyday operations, he believes the demand for specialized skills will only accelerate.

“I’ll be given the tools that companies will be looking for in the future,” he said.

He is looking forward to building a strong foundation in machine learning and AI engineering. But he keeps coming back to one opportunity that feels especially “Wentworth”: the co-op program.

“By doing a co-op, I can see directly how companies are using AI in the workforce,” Abromowich said. “AI is rapidly evolving. I think by majoring in it, I will be able to find a good career in a fast-growing field.”

For Wentworth, Abromowich is more than the first name on a roster. He represents the kind of student the Applied AI program was built for: curious, motivated, and focused on using emerging technology to create real impact.

And for Abromowich, the path is finally aligned, not just with what he wants to study, but with what he wants to do.
