Healey-Driscoll Administration Announces $12.7 Million to Support Life Sciences; Wentworth Secures Major Funding

Wentworth Institute of Technology has been awarded $830,674 in funding through the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) Workforce Development Capital Grant Program, as part of a broader $12.7 million statewide grant announcement from the Healey-Driscoll Administration supporting life sciences education and workforce development.

In the October 17, 2025 announcement, the MLSC said it is awarding nearly $9.5 million in Workforce Development Capital Grant Program funding to 18 institutions, with the funding expected to serve more than 3,000 students through capital investment in industry-aligned certificate and degree programs.

Wentworth was named among the awardees with two funded initiatives in Boston:

  • Wentworth Institute of Technology–Liang (BioTech in Gen Chem): $105,723
  • Wentworth Institute of Technology–Lawson (SHINE): $724,951

The press release also highlighted the statewide intent of the funding. “These grants strengthen the connection between STEM education and industry needs, ensuring Massachusetts remains a leader in life sciences workforce development for years to come,” said Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley. MLSC President and CEO Kirk Taylor, MD, added that the awards are meant to equip schools and support training programs so students have “the tools and guidance they need to pursue meaningful careers in the life sciences.”

Alongside the workforce development capital awards, the MLSC said it is also awarding more than $3.3 million for 49 projects through its STEM Equipment and Professional Development Grant Program, serving nearly 56,000 students at 131 schools and supporting professional development for more than 320 teachers.

The release noted that, since the STEM program’s inception, the MLSC has awarded more than $31.8 million to more than 400 public schools, and has awarded more than $205 million to support life sciences laboratory and training facilities at 58 higher education institutions.
