College of the Fenway Frequently Asked Questions
-
What does it mean to cross-register via the Colleges of the Fenway (COF)?
To cross-register means to enroll in and receive academic credit(s) for courses offered at one of the Colleges of the Fenway partner institutions. These institutions include Wentworth Institute of Technology (Wentworth), Emmanuel College (Emmanuel), Simmons University (Simmons), Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt), and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS).
-
Why would someone be interested in cross-registration?
Cross-registration via COF provides students with the unique opportunity to explore new academic interests or take courses that may be unavailable at Wentworth in order to fulfill their program requirements. Beyond courses, students can cultivate connections across institutions while gaining access to a wider network of faculty expertise, specialized facilities, and unique campus resources. Students can even pursue COF minors through the COF consortium, further enriching their overall academic journey. Please click here for more information regarding acceptable COF minors.
-
Who is eligible for cross-registration?
Full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students at Wentworth who are starting their second semester at the time of the COF course.
-
Who should a student speak with if they are interested in cross-registration via COF?
Student have access to four primary resources for guidance:
- Student Success Advisor (SSA) or Major Advisor
- Reference College of the Fenway Cross Registration Page for course offerings
- Wentworth's Registrar's Office (process only, e.g. deadlines)
- Host Institution's Registrar's Office (for questions related to approval)
-
What are the things I need to know before selecting COF courses?
- Before submitting a request, we strongly encourage students to meet with their SSA or Major Advisor to see if cross-registration via COF would be ideal for their academic plan.
- Advisors can then help students explore options and determine which program requirement the course(s) will satisfy by using Wentworth’s Transfer Course Equivalency Database (TES) to identify how the course(s) transfer(s) to Wentworth.
- For general questions about the cross-registration process, students can reach out to the Registrar's Office at Wentworth.
- For questions related to the host institution's prerequisites, student portals, or course withdrawal requests, please contact the host institution's Registrar's Office directly.
-
Where can students preview courses available for cross-registration and how can they cross-register for courses?
Students can visit the Cross-Registration Links section of the Colleges of the Fenway Cross-Registration Page to 1) search for courses and 2) submit a cross-registration request. Students are strongly encouraged to review the Steps to Cross-Register section thoroughly to learn more about the cross-registration process prior to submitting a request.
-
When will students be able to submit a cross-registration request?
Students can learn when the COF platform is open for requests by reviewing the cross-registration timeline on the College of the Fenway Cross-Registration Page. We recommend checking this page regularly—or bookmarking it—to stay informed about important dates and requirements.
-
When is the deadline to submit a cross-registration request?
Cross-registration requests will be accepted through the specific add/drop periods of the host institution listed on the Colleges of the Fenway Academic Calendar Page.
-
What are some common misconceptions about cross-registration that students have?
Here are some common misconceptions:
- Combined WIT and COF credits to become Full-Time status
Requirement: WIT students must be registered for 12.0 WIT credits or more prior to submitting a request through COF. For example, registering for 8.0 credits at WIT, and submitting a request for a 4.0-credit COF course to become full-time at WIT is not acceptable. - Submitting Multiple Requests for the Same Course
Some students may submit multiple requests for the same course to expedite the cross-registration approval process. Unfortunately, this approach only causes delays. Submit only one request for up to two courses, with a maximum of two courses per semester. - Overrides, Waitlists, & Faculty Permission
There are no overrides or waitlists for COF cross-registration. Permission from a faculty member or the School is not permissible. The home institution and host institution’s Registrar’s Offices are the only authorities that can approve or deny a cross-registration request.
- Combined WIT and COF credits to become Full-Time status
-
What would prevent a student from being able to cross-register for a course?
A cross-registration request will be denied if:
- The course is full.
- The student is not eligible for cross-registration.
- The student has not satisfied the necessary prerequisites.
- There is a time conflict with the student's schedule at their home institution.
- The student did not submit a single request for both the linked lecture and lab sections.
-
Do students have to pay extra to take COF courses?
- If a student is at full-time status and is registered for 12.0 - 20.0 credits in a semester (including the credits from the registered COF course), they will be billed at the standard full-time rate by Wentworth.
- If the COF course brings a student over the maximum limit of 20.0 credits in a given semester, there will be a per-credit tuition charge. More information can be found here.
- If registering for more than 20 credits, students must complete and submit a Credit Overload Form for Dean’s approval before the cross-registration request can be finalized, and the student’s bill can be updated accordingly.
- Please note that students are responsible for the cost of course materials and must procure materials on their own from the host institution’s bookstore.
- If students have any questions/concerns regarding financial aid or billing, please contact Student Financial Services at finaid@wit.edu or studentaccounts@wit.edu.
