The Value of a College Education

Follow along with junior industrial design major Zoe Graham as she takes us through what its like for her on co-op with Parlor Skis in Boston Massachusetts.

“I really enjoyed my time at Wentworth. You get to learn the theory and engineering principles behind everything, but there's this conscious effort to make sure that you're applying those skills.  It keeps things fun, being able to be hands-on. At Bose, I work in a very interdisciplinary team with a lot of talented, great people that are super motivating and fun to be around."

"I've fortunately been offered positions at both my co-ops and I'm trying to decide between the two after graduation. But in the meantime, I'm applying to medical school. I'm very excited. I’d like to go into the surgical field, hopefully becoming a pediatric surgeon or a reconstructive surgeon."

For her capstone, Brianna studied cardiovascular function and how different surgical suturing techniques can affect patient outcomes.

"I love how classes are small and having a personal relationship with professors, we also get to know our classmates very well because of this. In my experience, Wentworth students are perceived really well from many employers around New England."

"I am a part of the Student Association of Interior Design (SAID) and I've been a member since the beginning of my freshman year, but I was also elected as Secretary for the spring of my sophomore year into the fall of my junior year. Being a part of this club has allowed me to network within my field and make connections in the industry, and my position as secretary has also allowed me to develop leadership skills."

"Applied Science is great for people who want to be exposed to multiple scientific fields, topics, and techniques. My personal interest is in physics and chemistry, but coming out of this major I feel like I would also be qualified to take on any entry level research position in the Boston biotech scene."

"For my capstone, we chose a site in New Bedford in which we relocated a wastewater treatment plant and we designed a student dormitory and a we relocated a park. We incorporated a lot of fields and a lot of different areas for the public to use and students to use."

"For my COMP 2 class I made a COVID-19 social distancing app that works exactly as I intended. Working on it helped frame how to properly manage a project and create a product that is deployable. Wentworth prepares you for the world outside of school--I feel like I am getting all the tools need to succeed in not just my future career, but for life in general."

"I love being a Wentworth students because I always feel supported by my faculty. This school has pushed me to further lengths that I didn't know I could be doing at my age. I have been given countless opportunities to further my career from the school. I have been able to express my opinions and ideas in creative settings that help expand those ideas to different topics."

For our capstone, we created an app called What's the Word Wentworth. The main idea of it is to get students out and about through posting events. The app allows you to create events they can post publicly for pickup games of basketball or getting a group together to do a play. It has RSVP features and a map, so that individual students can post events in addition to campus organizations.

"For my group capstone, we wanted to build a microgreens farming system. Microgreens grow very quickly and are very profitable. Our system uses everything that you need for a successful farm.

For my co-op, I went to a company called Fitzemeyer & Tocci Associates, Inc. which I found through the career fair. I had zero experience and was very nervous about the engineering field, but Wentworth was able to alleviate that stress and help me find this co-op. I will actually be joining them full time as a project manager after graduation."
