Sophia A. Maggelakis, Ph.D., has been named Wentworth Institute of Technology’s next senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost, effective August 15, 2022.

Maggelakis’ appointment concludes a highly competitive six-month national search that was shaped by the needs and preferences shared by the Wentworth community earlier this year. In a letter to the community, President Mark A. Thompson wrote that Maggelakis is “an accomplished academic, teacher and leader who has demonstrated a caring and collaborative approach throughout her remarkable career in higher education.”

Maggelakis comes to Wentworth from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where she has been serving as dean of the College of Science since 2010. Prior to that, she founded and served as head of RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences after progressing through the faculty ranks. She has published book chapters, refereed journal articles, and presented numerous papers at national and international conferences in her research specialty of mathematical biology.

She has also received awards for her teaching and diversity advocacy, and has a track record of supporting faculty and staff while launching schools, institutes and programs at RIT, such as the Integrated Sciences Academy and the Women in Science program.

Maggelakis earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Computational and Applied Mathematics and B.S. in Mathematics from Old Dominion University. She also completed the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education program.

“With her background in teaching and research, her entrepreneurial spirit and her consultative approach, I am confident that Dr. Maggelakis will be a great fit for Wentworth,” said Thompson. “I know she is very excited to be joining our university.”
