Professor Williamson Honored with Prestigious 2025 IDSA Education Award

The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) has named Simon Williamson, professor of Industrial Design at Wentworth Institute of Technology, as the recipient of the 2025 Education Award. 

This national distinction is presented in recognition of Professor Williamson’s outstanding contributions to the field of design education, his dedicated mentorship, and his pivotal role in shaping the next generation of industrial designers. 

A cornerstone of the School of Architecture and Design, Williamson is known for a teaching philosophy that centers on "designing through making." In his design studios and courses on 3D Realization and CAD, he challenges students to blend traditional craftsmanship with advanced digital technologies. His curriculum encourages the creation of physical conceptual representations and testable prototypes, bridging the gap between analog and digital processes. 

"For Williamson, teaching remains the most fulfilling aspect of his career," the IDSA noted in their announcement. "It continually shapes his design approach and reminds him that students are the true source of inspiration and joy." 

The IDSA Education Award is reserved for educators who demonstrate exceptional achievement in advancing industrial design through teaching, scholarship, and service. Nominations for the award highlighted Williamson’s profound impact on his students and the broader design community. 

"His career reflects a sustained and meaningful integration of practice, teaching, and mentorship," wrote one nominator. "His service to students, to the academy, and to the profession is comprehensive, impactful, and deeply human-centered." 

Founded in 1965, the IDSA is one of the oldest and largest industrial design associations in the world. Their Education Award stands as a testament to educators who not only teach technical skills but also promote design as a force for innovation and positive change.
