Wentworth Institute of Technology's Construction Management Club traveled to a galaxy far, far away this fall and came back with two awards.

The student team's "Millennium Fal-CAN'," a 1,505-can recreation of the Star Wars spacecraft, won both the People's Choice Award and the Social Media Soup-er Star Award at Canstruction Boston 2026. It is the second year in a row the club has taken home both honors.

Hosted by the Boston chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS Boston), Canstruction Boston invites teams from the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries to design and build large-scale sculptures out of canned food and other non-perishable items. This year's theme, "Fictional Worlds," filled Atlantic Wharf in Boston with familiar characters and imaginary places. Twelve teams competed, and Wentworth was the only university in the field.

To build the Millennium Falcon, students designed the structure in Fusion 360 and modeled it layer by layer before assembling it can by can. People's Choice goes to the structure with the most public votes, and the Social Media Soup-er Star award recognizes the team that did the most to raise awareness of Canstruction online, judged on both reach and engagement. The Wentworth team's Falcon came out on top in both. Team captains Carson Roberge, Cristian Sciaudone, and Mia Zoghbi led the effort, and the winners were recognized at an awards ceremony in October.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, the food used in every structure is donated to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, which supports individuals and families facing food insecurity across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The food bank supplies more than 100 member agencies that help 50,000 to 70,000 people each month, sends food home with 1,500 students on weekends, and delivers groceries to 300 homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities. This year's event collected 29,011 cans and other food items.

Since it began in 2011, Canstruction Boston has donated nearly 600,000 pounds of food. The CM Club has taken part in Canstruction Boston since 2018.

"I couldn't be prouder of our CM Club students for their hard work, dedication, and continued commitment to giving back," said Michael J. D'Agostino, MSCM, the club's advisor. "Thank you to everyone who supported our team, voted for our structure, and helped make this year's event another tremendous success!"

National Recognition for a CM senior

The club's success caps a strong stretch for Wentworth's Sweeney Programs of Construction Management. Construction Management senior Melanie Chaves received a CMAA College of Fellows Scholarship at the Construction Management Association of America's 2026 National Conference in Denver.

Chaves is an active member of Wentworth's CMAA Student Chapter. Program faculty called the national honor a reflection of her hard work, leadership, and commitment to the construction management profession.
