Our Mission

The mission of the Construction Management program is to provide the student with both the education and work experience to enter the construction profession as a productive team member with the potential to become an innovative technical problem-solver and industry leader. The philosophy of the program is to offer a curriculum which emphasizes instruction that challenges, shapes and encourages students to think about and apply their expanding technical knowledge and organizational skills to the solution of contemporary problems. This philosophy is supported by the educational mission of the Institute that emphasizes physics and mathematics, both theoretical and applied the humanities and social sciences, communication skills and computer science. Students are prepared through their educational experience to adapt to changes in society, technology and the profession.

Goals

To accomplish this mission, the Department has established the following goals to prepare students for professional and personal success in the built environment so they may:

  • Maintain accreditation by the American Council of Construction Education (ACCE) which promotes, supports, and accredits construction education programs.
  • Successfully place students in positions appropriate for college graduates in the construction industry.
  • Maintain class sizes of no more than 30 students in each lecture and no more than 20 students in each lab.
  • Provide students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in supervisory and management roles in construction related fields.

Objectives

The Myles and Eugenia Sweeney Department of Construction Management at Wentworth is a cohesive group of experienced faculty and staff working together to provide students with a nationally recognized Construction Management education. The curriculum in Construction Management at Wentworth leads to a Bachelor of Science degree that is accredited by the American Council of Construction Education.

The Construction Management program focuses on three fundamental principles:

Creative Problem Solving/Spirit of Innovation

A successful career in construction requires an ability to solve problems. Our approach for providing these skills is to utilize the collaborative opportunities available in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction Management. Innovative problem solving requires a broad base of experiences. Our students are exposed to other disciplines throughout their educational career at Wentworth. They interact with designers and engineers and work together on projects. These projects are not only academic in nature but are projects that industry has requested. This exposure will provide a foundation for creative problem solving which will serve the student throughout their professional career.

Collaboration

The construction industry is based upon teams with different backgrounds working together to deliver a construction project that is-on time, on budget, and functional.

The learning environment at Wentworth provides the opportunity for the Construction Management student to gain first-hand experience working with designers and engineers using collaborative projects during the academic year as well as working on major construction projects during co-op.

These experiences lay the foundation for a sustainable professional career.

Rich Learning Experience

The Wentworth campus offers an exceptional learning experience being located in the heart of Boston. Offering an exposure to the arts, music and the social interaction with other higher educational institutions, the Construction Management program specifically offers students the following

  • A Mentoring Program where the student is paired with a construction professional

  • Actual Construction Management work experience by way of the co-op

The following are the learning outcomes that will be used to assess the Construction Management program.

  1. Create written communications appropriate to the construction discipline.
  2. Create oral presentations appropriate to the construction discipline.
  3. Create a construction project safety plan.
  4. Create construction project cost estimates.
  5. Create construction project schedules.
  6. Analyze professional decisions based on ethical principles.
  7. Analyze construction documents for planning and management of construction processes.
  8. Analyze methods, materials, and equipment used to construct projects.
  9. Apply construction management skills as a member of a multi- disciplinary team.
  10. Apply electronic-based technology to manage the construction process.
  11. Apply basic surveying techniques for construction layout and control.
  12. Understand different methods of project delivery and the roles and responsibilities of all constituencies involved in the design and construction process.
  13. Understand construction risk management.
  14. Understand construction accounting and cost control.
  15. Understand construction quality assurance and control.
  16. Understand construction project control processes.
  17. Understand the legal implications of contract, common, and regulatory law to manage a construction project.
  18. Understand the basic principles of sustainable construction.
  19. Understand the basic principles of structural behavior.
  20. Understand the basic principles of mechanical, electrical and piping systems.

These learning experiences offer the student a rich environment for learning and an advantage in pursuing a successful career in construction management.

Construction Management is the business of managing construction projects. This rapidly growing profession requires technical expertise, a clear understanding of the construction process, and a unique array of problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. Our graduates are ready for the challenges of the construction industry and are actively recruited by construction firms and related industry employers.

The Wentworth Construction Management program offers a balance between academics and a learn-by-doing approach. The Construction Management student will be exposed to business administration, mathematics, chemistry, and design to ensure a well-rounded graduate ready to excel in the world of construction.

We also offer a well established and successful mentoring program, student organizations and collaboration with design professionals to bring a complete picture of the construction environment.
