Service Learning: Learning Well by Doing Good
Service learning is a project-based teaching and learning model that integrates community engagement with instruction, social innovation, and reflection. The goal is to enrich the learning experience for our students, teach the value of social responsibility and strengthen our surrounding communities.
Service learning projects can be executed through coursework under the direction of faculty, through involvement in student clubs and organizations, by undertaking cooperative learning positions with community organizations, or through Wentworth’s required senior year capstone.
Community Co-op
Community co-op gives students the chance to work on local, community-based project(s) for their required co-op semesters.
Community Projects
Wentworth's mission is to provide a comprehensive interdisciplinary, project-based education in engineering, technology, design and management that integrates classroom, laboratory, studio, cooperative and experiential learning resulting in a career-ready, skilled professional and engaged citizen. Because of that, students are not only looking for a project-based education, they are seeking community-based projects to bring their learned skills to urban society. Many courses around the Institute look to enhance the learning experience by bringing community stakeholders into the classroom to take on social issues.
Certificate Program
The Certificate in Community Learning is a unique program opportunity at Wentworth to recognize students who have been regular participants of community engagement programming and service learning projects during their time at Wentworth. The recipients of the Certificate are announced at graduation in addition to their earned degree. Students who are interested in the program should contact the Center and see if they are on track to qualify for the Certificate.
Service Learning Committee
The Committee comprises multiple faculty members from each college. Members convene to discuss service learning and community engagement projects. The Committee also reviews and approves portfolios for the Certificate in Community Learning. The Certificate program provides an opportunity for students to receive academic recognition for their participation in service learning and community engagement.
