Benefits to include networking, professional development opportunities

Wentworth Institute of Technology has long proven to be a school of access and opportunity. Now, the university is adding to that reputation by joining Tri Alpha, a national honor society for first-generation students.

The Alpha Alpha Alpha Honor Society, more commonly known by its shorter moniker, is a nonprofit that recognizes the academic achievements of first-generation college students and the unique challenges and opportunities that come with their respective experiences. Wentworth’s local chapter will be known as Gamma Chi.

“We're very excited to be launching this initiative,” said Ella Howard, associate professor of History at Wentworth and Tri Alpha faculty advisor. “When I was an undergraduate student, these sorts of organizations didn't exist, but I really wish they had! As the first person in my family to attend college I had to navigate lots of situations on my own with no one to offer advice.”

Students whose parents or legal guardians did not receive a four-year college degree will be eligible, and students must maintain a certain grade point average. Wentworth’s chapter will provide opportunities for networking and professional development to help members succeed both during college and beyond. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for Wentworth faculty and staff who are first generation to join as members, as well as serve as mentors.

“First-generation students bring new perspectives to higher education and make valuable contributions to campus life,” said Howard. “Membership will also indicate to future employers and graduate schools that you have achieved a high level of academic performance without some of the advantages that other students have enjoyed.”

A Tri Alpha induction ceremony will be held April 6 for the first cohort of Wentworth members. Students who meet the eligibility requirements (undergraduate GPA of at least 3.25 and a minimum of 2 full terms of study credits earned or graduate GPA of at least 3.5 and a minimum of 9 earned credits) who identify as first-generation students will receive an invitation in February.
