Bystander Intervention
The Dean of Students Office offers a variety of Bystander Intervention Training workshops, programming, and resources throughout the academic year. These workshops aim to assist students in navigating difficult situations, provide tools for safe intervention, and build a community of awareness on-campus.
Bystander Intervention Workshops (2024-25)
Step UP! - Part 1:
Most problematic behaviors involve bystanders. Step UP! training provides a framework explaining the bystander effect, reviews relevant research and teaches skills for intervening successfully using the 5 Decision Making Steps, the 5 Ds and the S.E.E.K. Model (Safe; Early; Effective; Kind). Teaching people about the barriers to helping as well as strategies, skills and the determinants of prosocial behavior makes them more likely to help in the future. Now more than ever leaders understand the importance of being an active bystander. The bottom line is many unfortunate incidents are preventable with intervention.
The goals of Step UP! - Part 1 are to:
- Raise awareness of helping behaviors
- Increase motivation to help
- Learn strategies and develop skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns
- Ensure the safety and well-being of self and others
Step UP! - Part 2:
Utilizing the Step UP! framework, we'll practice intervention techniques and discuss the impacts intervening can have. The workshop will focus on developing your skills in intervention and discussing how you can facilitate conversations around bystander intervention on-campus.
The goals of Step UP! - Part 2 are to:
- Practice bystander intervention techniques
- Navigate creating a culture of intervention
- Learn strategies for facilitating conversations about bystander intervention
