  • What is University Probation?

As stated in the Student Code of Conduct,” University Probation is a six-month period of time during which the student is given the opportunity to modify their behavior, to complete specific assignments, meet with designated persons, and demonstrate a positive contribution to the University community in an effort regain privileges within the University community. After six months of University probation, the student may apply for a review of the student’s probationary status. The student will meet with the University Probation Review Committee and must demonstrate significant contributions, in academics, conduct and engagement. Students or organizations on University Probation are not considered to be in good disciplinary standing with the University, this may impact their ability to participate in intercollegiate athletics, represent the University, student leadership positions, study abroad opportunities, extracurricular and/or residence life activities. Additionally, any violation of University policy during the probation period will be viewed as a violation of probation and will result in further disciplinary action.”

  • What happens if a student violates the Student Code of Conduct while on University Probation?

If a student Violates the Student Code of Conduct while on University Probation, the student could potentially face suspension and or expulsion from the University.

  • What is the Probation Review Committee?

The University Probation Review Committee is a student-led committee that meets with students who have been assigned University Probation through the Wentworth Student Code of Conduct process. During a student’s review, the Committee engages the student in conversation about their growth and determines whether the student has met the pre-established criteria (conduct, academics, and engagement) to have their University Probation status lifted.

  • How does a student request a University Probation Review and what happens?

After six months from being placed on University Probation, the student will be able to request a meeting with the University Probation Review Committee and petition to have the University Probation end. The request can be made here. It is the student’s responsibility to request a meeting with the University Probation Review Committee. The Center for Student Life will not be sending out reminders. If the student has not completed all other assigned sanctions, the student’s request will likely be denied, and the student will face additional action for not completing sanctions.

Once the student submits a request to appear before the Committee, the student will be notified of the date, time, and location of the review meeting. The Probation Review Committee will consist of at least two University community members. Generally, a University Probation Review Committee will have an advisor and two students. At this meeting, the student will be able to present information that the University Probation Review Committee will use to review the status. Information regarding the student’s conduct history and academic transcript will also be made available to the Committee. The University Probation Review Committee will determine if the student’s University Probation ends or if it will continue with an ability to re-apply in an additional six months. The Probation Review Committee’s decision is final and there is no appeal.

  • What are the criteria use by the University Probation Review Committee?

The Probation Review Committee will examine three areas. Any documentation submitted by the student/group should be relevant to the probationary period. The student should prepare a personal statement as well as be prepared to present on the following:

Conduct: Be prepared to discuss the incident and how the student/group’s behavior/attitude has or has not changed since it occurred. The mere act of not being found in violation for committing additional Student Code violations is insufficient. That is an expectation. The committee will discuss if the student/group has truly modified their behavior and how that has impacted the student/group. Has the student/group taken positive steps towards addressing the issue of the behavior? Letters from individuals describing the student/group’s progress would be beneficial.

Academics: Is the student succeeding academically? Has their GPA increased or decreased? Does the student have an academic plan? Is the student involved in their academic department (e.g., academic clubs, programs)? What are the student’s future career goals? Progress reports and letters from faculty and the student’s advisor may be helpful.

Engagement: How is the student/groups positively engaged in the University community? Is the student involved in clubs, organizations, activities, other employment, or outreach? Does the student hold any leadership positions? Again, letters from organization advisors, employers, and staff can be helpful.

  • What is the role of the advisor in this process?

The advisor ensures that the process is followed and provides information relative to the University student conduct process. The advisor is present at the meeting but does not make any decisions (approval or denial) this is the role of the student.

  • What happens if the students University Probation is lifted?

The student will be in good standing within the University and student conduct and regains all the privileges associated with that.

  • What happens if the student’s request is denied?

The student will remain on University Probation. The student has an opportunity to request to appear before the Probation Review Committee in six months from the date of the last review meeting.

  • What would the University Probation Review meeting look like?

    1. Introduction and Opening Remarks from Committee
