Wentworth Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Latine Heritage Month or more commonly known as National Hispanic Heritage Month (Spanish: Mes nacional de la herencia hispana) is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Latine people to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
At Wentworth, The Center for Diversity and Global Engagement is excited to continue this celebration by continuing conversations and adding to this complex narrative.
During the span of September 15th to October 15, the Center hopes to engage in conversations specifically about what it means to be Latine, the power of words and self-identity, and how to have conversations to build bridges across difference. All LHM events are open to everyone and, for a kick off event on September 15, we invite everyone to get a taste of various desserts from Puerto Rico, as one of very own student’s grandmothers provides from her own kitchen.
We invite everyone to join us to listen and move to music heard all across Latin America and the U.S with Bailemos on September 29. We invite folks to grapple with the evolution of terms from Hispanic, Latino, Latinx, and Latine – what does claiming a word do for groups of people? What does it do for historically marginalized peoples’ visibility? Let’s chat.
Lastly, we invite Latine students specifically for a facilitated workshop and networking event with Latine STEM professionals. What does it look like to honor one’s multiple identities in the workplace? Is it possible to bring your full authentic self to work? We will be tackling all these questions and more on Fri, October 14.
We hope these programs will leave the Wentworth community with the opportunities to connect, reflect, and get a glimpse of the nuance behind the Latine experience at Wentworth and beyond. We hope to see you there.
