A new tradition was born this week as first-year students were welcomed in Watson Auditorium by a host of people including Wentworth Institute of Technology alumni.

The event on October 5 found Provost Ian Lapp serving as host with President Mark A. Thompson, Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Nicole Price, and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Peter Fowler also speaking.

Thompson noted the Institute’s founding by Boston entrepreneur Arioch Wentworth in 1904, a time when America was emerging from the Industrial Revolution and in need of skilled employees.

“He knew that the old apprentice learning model would not be enough to tackle the needs of a rapidly accelerating marketplace and economy. He knew that students would need an improved, hands-on learning model to keep pace with global leaders,” said Thompson. “And so, he bequeathed his estate to form Wentworth Institute of Technology.”

A panel of Wentworth graduates took the stage for a panel discussion based on questions from the audience, and each dean representing all five schools introduced themselves to students.

“My vision for Wentworth is one where you, the student, are placed at the center of our mission,” said Thompson. “You are why we are here. You are why I am here, and we are committed to your success both while you are with us on campus.”
