Architecture and Design School Collaborates with Industry Leaders at Council Meeting
Wentworth Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) recently held its first Industry Professionals Advisory Council (IPAC) gathering since the pandemic, bringing together a diverse group of professionals representing industry and education to advise on the future of the school’s programs.
Dean Sedef Doganer organized the evening, which began with presentations by SoAD administrators and faculty highlighting the current state of the program, including new initiatives such as the climate action and social equity focus, the community design center, and the exploration of AI in architectural education. Following the presentations, Architecture IPAC members engaged in an open discussion, offering feedback, suggestions, and proposals for future collaboration.
Key Discussion Topics
- Evolution of the co-op program and the development of a "teaching firm" system: Architecture IPAC members discussed ways to enhance the co-op program and explored the possibility of creating a "teaching firm" system similar to teaching hospitals for medical students.
- Nurturing a reflective and questioning attitude: The group emphasized the importance of fostering critical thinking and a questioning approach in students and graduates, especially in a rapidly evolving profession.
- Teaching the art of client dialogue: Discussion centered on how to equip students with the skills to engage in effective and respectful dialogue with clients, even when there are disagreements.
- Expanding sustainability opportunities: Architecture IPAC members praised Wentworth's commitment to sustainability (including reuse of existing structures) and encouraged the school to find ways to expand these opportunities for all students.
- Professional development for faculty: The council recommended exploring funding opportunities for professional development initiatives for faculty.
Looking Ahead
The next Architecture IPAC meeting is scheduled for Fall 2024. In the meantime, SoAD administration and faculty will continue to engage with individual council members on projects of mutual interest.
