Kelly Hutzell

Bio
Kelly J. Hutzell, an urban designer and educator, serves as an Associate Dean of the School of Architecture and Design at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Having worked as Director of the New Jersey School of Architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology and as an Associate Professor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University in both Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Doha, Qatar, she has nearly twenty years of teaching and academic program development at polytechnic institutions.
Her teaching, research and practice focus on a range of contemporary urban design issues: innovative mapping of cultural, economic, and environmental transformations; the creation of sustainable design guidelines for large-scale projects; and the development of digital architectural guidebooks. Her research on Pittsburgh’s urban renewal was featured in an exhibition at the Heinz Architectural Center entitled Imagining the Modern, and she contributed an essay to the book of the same name. Her work documenting Doha’s urban transformation has been published in Al Manakh: Gulf Continued, and in AD Magazine.
Her academic career has been bolstered by more than a decade of practice, including at Machado and Silvetti Associates and OverUnder in Boston focused on the design of public buildings and spaces in the Middle East and the U.S. Kelly received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Roger Williams University and a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design degree from Columbia University.
