What courses do you teach?
I teach Computer Science I (C++ and Java), Computer Science II (C++ and Java), Object-Oriented Programming, Data Structures, Mobile App Development, Web Development, Mobile Health, and Senior Project.
How have your interests, research or experience led you to your field?
There was an anecdote about why I chose Computer Science as a major. I shared it in some of my classes with students. To make a long story short, it was an accident. I was scared by this major, and not many people knew what Computer Science was at the time.
My freshman year was a nightmare. Did I sleep and still hold a keyboard? Yes, I did. I can’t remember how many nights I slept with a disassembled computer, surrounded by scattered computer components (i.e., computer case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, sound card, floppy disk, etc.) in my freshman year. Compared to my classmates, my starting point was far behind them, but I didn’t give up. My undergraduate study provided me a foundation to explore advanced topics in research. This passion helped me to continue to pursue my M.S. and Ph.D. studies afterward.
Why I am proud to be part of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
I am proud to be part of the Asian and Pacific Islander American community because I share similar values with people in the same community. I respect people’s cultures and choices and hope to pass the same values to our next generation. I believe people in this community like to help each other, even during this pandemic period.
Describe one exciting thing that you are working on or is happening in your classroom.
My research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) focuses on mobile health, Artificial Intelligence (AI) on mobile devices, web customization and automation, and readability enhancement. In addition to my research experience, I also have experience in the industry. Therefore, my teaching has many practical questions borrowed from the industry and personal learning from the research work. Many students have confirmed that my classes have helped them secure a full-time job in the industry. Some of them go to graduate schools due to the topics learned from the classes and they've been inspired to do further study.
There are many exciting things I am working on. For example, my research team is working on applying mobile engineering and technologies to help medical professionals address existing clinical challenges. We not only work with physicians, but we also work with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) doctors.
What is one interesting fact about you?
I am not a native English speaker. Therefore, I need to put more effort into my teaching to ensure the students understand what I want to explain. One funny and rewarding quote from the students is, “this guy has an accent, but we all understand him very well.”
