Graduate students in Wentworth Institute of Technology’s Master of Architecture program were recognized for excellence in the Affordable Housing Development Competition on Tuesday night.

Three groups from Professor Ann Borst’s “Affordable Housing” seminar took part in the competition with two of the groups respectively earning second place (Baycrest Commons) and third place (Reservoir Village).

Now in its 21st year, the annual event is primarily sponsored by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston and the Boston Society of Architects. Student teams from Boston-area graduate schools are invited to develop and submit complete proposals for real, local affordable housing projects. Teams work alongside industry professionals to gain real-world practice in many facets of the process.

“It provides the opportunity for students in architecture, urban planning, real estate development, finance and public policy to work with non-profit developers on active prospective projects,” said Borst in a message. “The 50-page books they produce are comprehensive and highly professional.”

Wentworth students considered the design components within their teams and responded to the goals of developers and needs of the community.

Wentworth participants included:

  • Baycrest Commons, Portland ME - Daniel Bryer, Tom Caruso, Jenny Choeimalai, Trevor Salvini

  • Reservoir Village, Franklin MA - Hannah Clark, Camille Harvanek, Rebecca Klanchesser, Lily Reiner

  • The Paraclete Residences, South Boston MA - Dan Deodato, Bobby Dortona, Michael Riley, Alex Sauer
