If I hadn’t done the Fulbright Program, I wouldn’t have had those [impactful] opportunities.

Assistant Professor Hajar Jafferji joined Wentworth in September 2017. She uses her background in Structural Engineering with a focus on infrastructure materials to teach students in the Civil Engineering Program.

Jafferji received a Fulbright scholarship to Morocco in 2015 while pursuing her doctoral degree in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). During her nine-month Fulbright experience, she worked on researching the materials used in the historical preservation of structures, and she had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with universities and organizations throughout Morocco. According to Jafferji, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a Fulbright Scholar was the eye-opening, hands-on learning experiences she encountered.

“As a student, you might read a book about a building from the ninth century, but until you’re able to see, and learn about it and understand how a structure was built back then, that’s something you can’t learn when you’re just sitting in the classroom,” says Jafferji.

In addition to the impactful opportunities, she had to view and work with incredible historical structures, another impressive aspect of being a Fulbright Scholar was the amazing people she met along the way and the life-long collaborations she has maintained with Morocco.

“If I hadn’t done the Fulbright Program, I wouldn’t have had those opportunities,” says Jafferji.

For Jafferji, who looks forward to potential collaborations with Morocco in the future, it was an indescribable experience.
