Wentworth Recycles

The Physical Plant’s recycling program represents Wentworth’s commitment to education, and our contribution to the conservation of natural resources and the environment. The program provides for an economical and environmentally safe way to recycle many of the waste items on campus. Students from the Boston Public Schools “School-to-Career” program, under the supervision of teachers/coaches, collect recyclable materials from various sites on campus and package them for collection.

In addition to zero-sort recycling, we also compost food waste in the Wentworth Cafeteria. Food waste must be diverted from the trash per the statewide organics waste ban implemented by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. By diverting food scraps to a local farm for composting, WIT also turns this waste into a resource for agriculture.

Procedures for sorting waste in the cafeteria are as follows:

  • Step 1. Compost: Place all food scraps into the Compost (green)
  • Step 2. Recycle: Place all clean plastic and paper containers into Zero-Sort Recycling (blue)
  • Step 3. Trash: Place remaining items (wrappers, styrofoam, liquids & dirty containers) into the Trash (black)
