Graduate Faculty Criteria

Graduate Faculty

Faculty rank: Full-time faculty at or above Assistant Professor rank

Terminal degree: Terminal degree in a relevant discipline.  Alternatively, a Graduate Faculty nominee may document exceptional expertise generally recognized in the field.

Teaching/research/creative activity/professional practice: Exhibit excellence in teaching and continued research/creative activity in his/her specialization

Length of Term: Up to 5 years, with opportunity for reappointment (renewable)

Responsibilities: Eligible to fulfill all functions of a Graduate Faculty member, including directing master’s theses and serving on the GPC

Associate Graduate Faculty

Faculty rank: Full- or part-time; need not hold professorial rank

Terminal degree: Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.  Exceptions may be made for (a) ABD doctoral candidates in direct-to-doctorate programs, and (b) individuals who demonstrate extraordinary expertise in the subject(s) they are teaching.

Teaching/research/creative activity/professional practice: Consideration is given to the following qualifications:

  • Past teaching evaluations (graduate or undergraduate)
  • Peer-reviewed research (published or presented)
  • Creative activity (commissions, exhibits, performances)
  • Professional practice (years of experience, growth in responsibility)
  • Leadership and active participation in professional organizations

Length of Term: Initial appointment for 1 year; reappointment for 1 to 3 years (renewable)

Responsibilities: Eligible to fulfill all functions of a Graduate Faculty member, including directing master’s theses and serving on the GPC
