Transportation

Collectively, transportation-related GHG emissions account for 23% of the campus carbon footprint. This includes commuting, business travel, and the institutional fleet.

Commuting Resources

The largest transportation impacts by far, result from commuting to and from campus.

An estimated 7 million miles are traveled by faculty, staff, and students each year.  As a result of concerted efforts to reduce transportation demand, most of the students and nearly half of faculty and staff take alternate modes to campus:

Wentworth strongly encourages its faculty, staff, and students to utilize alternative methods of transportation that are less harmful to the environment. To encourage smarter transportation choices, WIT offers a number of resources to its commuters:

  • Students may pre-order a semester T-pass at the Info Hub in Flanagan to receive a 15% off discount.
  • Wentworth provides over 100 bike spaces on campus. Shower facilities are available in the men’s and women’s locker rooms located inside the Schumann Fitness Center. Click here to find more public bike racks that available for use in our neighborhood.

Business travel includes air travel, and car and bus rental for activities such as Athletics competitions, and recruitment by Admissions.   WIT is currently evaluating options to reduce the environmental impacts associated with this travel.

Campus Fleet

Wentworth owns and leases very few vehicles, with the majority dedicated to Physical Plant operations.  The Physical Plant has purchased six electric vehicles to reduce the need for diesel trucks:
