Campus Safety
The Wentworth Police Department investigates
all reported criminal activity and other safety related incidents
occurring on campus. Officers also enforce institute policies, parking
regulations, state and federal laws and the Student Code of Conduct.
The office of Housing and Residential Life 617-989-4160 and the
Dean of Students Office 617-989-4487 can also assist students in
reporting crimes and serious incidents while the Office of Human
Resources 617-989-4190 can assist employees. Counseling and other
victim support services are also available upon request to all students
and employees at Wentworth. Wentworth Police and the three offices
mentioned above will accept and assist community members with confidential
crime reports.
Crime Alerts are distributed to all community members, in a timely
manner, when incidents are determined to be a threat to the community.
The alert bulletins are posted throughout campus and sent to faculty,
staff and students via our Campus Pipeline email
system.
Safety / Crime Prevention Programs
The Wentworth Department of Public Safety believes that a well-informed,
alert public is the best defense against crime. Safety and security
are concerns that should be shared by all members of the campus
community. For these reasons, the Department of Public Safety offers
a number of programs throughout the academic year to address personal
safety, property security, and crime prevention. These programs
are scheduled through any of the organizations on campus. The following
is a list of crime prevention programs available at WIT:
- 24 Hour Safety Escort Service
Provided by vehicle or on
foot to community members traveling on campus or to local green
or orange line MBTA stops.
- R.A.D. (systems)
A Rape Aggression Defense program is offered
by specially trained and certified officers at least twice per year.
The objective of this program is to develop and enhance the options
of self defense, so they may become viable considerations to the
woman who is attacked. RAD system training is also available for
men.
- Sexual Assault Awareness, Education and Prevention
Wentworth
Police are members of local and regional sexual assault prevention
and investigation networks. Several police officers have received
specialized training and certification
in the investigation of sexual assault related crimes. Programs
on sexual assault awareness, education and prevention are presented
each semester.
- Crime Alerts
Crime alerts are distributed to all members
of the community when incidents (which are determined to be a threat
to the community) occur. These notices also include recommended
precautionary measures that should be observed by members of the
community.
Community Standards
The Office of Community Standards works to protect and perpetuate the Wentworth Student Code of Conduct. This office, in conjunction with campus partners protects the rights of the community through the enforcement of behavioral expectations and standards. These standards help to construct and reinforce a campus community that supports the academic mission of the Institute by providing a safe, welcoming and supportive campus environment.
Based on the principles set forth in the Wentworth Creed, our Institute is strongly committed to the development of the student and promotion of personal integrity and self-responsibility. Students enrolling at Wentworth become citizens of the community and are entitled to enjoy the privileges and assume the responsibilities associated with this affiliation. All members of the Wentworth community are expected to uphold the Institute’s policies as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.
The Creed
Since 1904, four distinctive traits have graced Wentworth Institute of Technology’s seal: Honesty, Energy, Economy, and System. These virtues continue to guide the Wentworth community today, both in and out of the classroom.
- HONESTY
We strive always to be honest in thought and deed; we are true to ourselves and to others. We do not lie, cheat, steal, or dissemble, nor do we tolerate such behavior in others. We try to show decency and respect to all. And in all circumstances we take responsibility for our conduct.
- ENERGY
We believe in putting forth the strongest possible effort. We recognize that hard work invariably produces good results. We pledge to dedicate our energy to benefit not just ourselves, but also our families, friends, classmates, and community.
- ECONOMY
We seek to use our resources wisely at all times. We accept our obligation to safeguard the earth, its resources, its life, and its energy for the benefit of future generations.
- SYSTEM
We cultivate the habits of discipline and reason in our scholarly, professional, and personal lives. We believe that following an orderly and rational system offers us the best path to success as students, as workers and as human beings.
By our conduct and thought to these principles, we commit ourselves to the unflagging pursuit of academic, professional, and personal excellence.
