GE Aviation and Wentworth Partner for Research Program

Wentworth students pose with President Zorica Pantic after presenting to members of GE Aviation

Boston, MA—As one of the aerospace industry’s largest and most successful manufacturing companies, GE Aviation has firmly established itself as a leader in the design and production of aircraft engines and related systems.  With a highly successful co-op program and an innovative approach to education in EPIC Learning, Wentworth Institute of Technology is producing the future leaders in engineering, technology, design, build, and management fields. GE Aviation and Wentworth have formed a corporate partnership to create an educational Manufacturing Technology Research Program.

This innovative program was established to facilitate GE and Wentworth’s mutual interests to stimulate manufacturing process creativity. Wentworth students taking part in a spring 2014 Manufacturing Engineering course were asked to help re-design an airplane engine component. Students employed various techniques including Pareto Analysis, Cause and Effect Diagrams, and Design for Manufacturing as a part of the value analysis of the component, and additionally made recommendations for the more efficient mechanical design of the component. Students presented their work to a panel of faculty and GE representatives to be considered for implementation.

“Our partnership with GE Aviation is a great example of our externally-collaborative, project-based learning initiatives that we have successfully implemented here at Wentworth,” said President Zorica Pantić. “Our students are among the most innovative and skilled in the country and we are proud to have them working with such an esteemed organization as GE Aviation.”

GE Aviation will gain property rights to all charts, forms, presentations, and materials generated by Wentworth students. Students, in turn, gain invaluable experience working on real designs for a major company, as well as engineering expertise and access to technical resources from GE.

“The students of Wentworth are doing great things and receiving an education that will serve them incredibly well in the future. I’m glad they’re taking advantage of this opportunity through GE,” said Mike Sims, an executive and general manager for GE Aviation, as well as Wentworth’s 2014 Spring Commencement speaker. “The fact that they come from different disciplines and are working together is also an incredible thing.”
