A Local Alternative Spring Break
Instead of heading to Florida or the Dominican Republic like many alternative spring breakers, a group of Wentworth students will spend their spring break volunteering at service organizations around Boston. Fundraising for the March trip kicks off in early February with events surrounding Valentine’s Day.
This is the first year for an alternative spring break trip from Wentworth to be staying in Boston. Junior business management student Anzia Mendez-Neff is organizing the trip, along with Brittany Wilson-Guillermo, who is a junior mechanical engineering major.
“We’re re-emphasizing that there’s always a need at home,” Mendez-Neff said. “People always want to go far away, but there are community issues that need to be addressed in Boston, too.”
The fifteen students will stay at a hostel in Boston’s Chinatown, working with different hunger, homeless, and childhood education service organizations each day. Meanwhile, two other groups of Wentworth students will travel to Florida and Louisiana for separate alternative spring break trips.
“Last year on our alternative spring break trip to New Orleans, both Brittany and I felt we had a real sense of family within the group, and we wanted to stay in the hostel for the week to recreate that,” Mendez-Neff said.
To finance the trip, the students will host several fundraisers in February, including a carnation sale in The Flanagan Campus Center, where they will sell carnations and candy for $2 during the week of Valentine’s Day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Friday, February 15, they will also host a Valentine’s Day dance in the Evans Way/Tudbury Hall auditorium.
