Civil engineering technology major Evandrike Correia can’t help but imagine the future when he rides the Green Line. That’s because he helped design an additional seven stops beyond the existing Lechmere Station.

Correia recently worked as a co-op to create building information models, a process involving digital representations of physical facilities known as BIM, for global project management firm AECOM—the company responsible for the MBTA Green Line Extension Project.

“When I got there, there was more work than people,” Correia said. “I took over some of the work that the engineers didn’t have time to do.” Correia worked closely with the engineers at the Los Angeles-based company’s Boston office, even attending meetings on behalf of the engineers to collect necessary information for their projects.

While Correia couldn’t go into specifics about the ongoing project, he was able to share the software used throughout the design process: Revit. In fact, students at Wentworth now learn the software in class, which made Correia even more valuable to the engineering team throughout his co-op.

“It has everything you need, all in one,” Correia said. “Instead of using several different programs, you just need Revit. You can use it to [virtually] walk through the stations as if they were real.”

AECOM is currently in the planning stages of the project and will start building the stations in September with an expected completion date of March 2015. Correia will continue working part-time for AECOM during the summer, and might complete a second co-op with the company.

“I may be able to go and work for the company in Abu Dhabi for my second co-op, which would be exciting,” he said.

After a few more years in the United States, Correia plans to return home to Angola and hopes to start his own construction business there one day.
