Designing Her Future

Co-op Position: Interior Design Intern

Amanda Vicari, BINT ’13, recalls her recent co-op experience at architecture and design firm Spagnolo Gisness and Associates Inc. as diverse. While there, she worked on everything from planning an office building to constructing an edible Zakim Bridge to win a gingerbread contest.
“I touched almost every part of the design process on projects,” said Vicari. “I really was a jack of all trades.”
She even created her own projects, such as designing the offices of a Boston law firm, complete with floor plans and material, furniture, and lighting options.
“She is very innovative,” said supervisor Brittney Herrera, a senior interior designer at Spagnolo. “She was able to come up with solutions in a short period of time.”
Vicari wound up learning a lot about professional relationships from a series of “lunch and learns” she planned. Furniture and interior design company representatives would come to Spagnolo to showcase their products and deliver company updates.
“You gain a relationship with the reps, and the reps are the best because they always know [companies] who have jobs [available],” Vicari said.
In addition to arranging “lunch and learns,” Vicari also updated the company library, created finish boards, and worked on permit and construction document sets.
Vicari completed her co-op in December. Now, she says, she has a clearer idea of her design interests.
“I’m really interested in corporate [interior design],” she said.
But that’s not all.
“I’m interested in the psychology of [retail], the way things are placed [in stores] to get people to buy them,” Vicari said.
