Student Profile: Brad Powers
What did you enjoy most about your program?
The Electromechanical program offers a truly unique combination of electrical and mechanical engineering that you cannot get at any other school in the area. Since most things around us are neither purely electrical or mechanical, this cross disciplinary viewpoint enables us to understand systems as a whole. The Electromechanical program is also small and tightly knit. Through the course of the five years, students become very familiar with the professors and each other. What results is a strong sense of community you wouldn’t get elsewhere.
What was your most memorable college experience?
In the classroom one of the most outstanding thing I remember was finally reaching the point, sometime around the beginning of the fifth year, that everything started to make sense within the big picture. Throughout the course of the years, we were exposed to so many pieces of information and knowledge it became somewhat overwhelming. By our final year we had enough academic and real-world experience to start to thoroughly understand.
What’s the most important thing you learned at Wentworth – what’s your biggest takeaway?
Wentworth’s entire academic process is based around the importance of practical, real-world applications of technology. Theory is essential to the learning process and is the first step to understanding anything. Wentworth classes always took that second step to introduce us to the practical applications of the theory.
What did you like best about co-op?
I worked both of my co-op semesters in the research department at iRobot Corporation. I spent these two summers working with robotics researchers and scientists on cutting-edge developments in the robotics field. These experiences reinforced for me the understanding of what engineers do in real-world settings. I also did a great deal of learning about topics I would have never had the opportunity to study in the classroom.
What are your future plans?
For the next month I will continue working with my senior design team on our project. We are working to create an unmanned aircraft and are looking to use the nice weather to do more testing. We will bring our project to a national competition in June. After that, I hope to start working. I’m focusing my job search in the robotics, or unmanned systems, field and will mostly likely begin to pursue a master’s degree sometime in the near future.
