Heavy and Highway Construction

The heavy and highway construction certificate at Wentworth Institute of Technology is designed for professionals in the vertical construction field who would like to migrate to horizontal construction. Through this certificate students will be exposed to a variety of topics in horizontal construction, including: earthwork and pavements, surveying with CAD applications, environmental compliance, and bridge structures.

This program is ideal for adult learners, with fast-paced seven week courses that allow you to quickly gain career-enhancing skills.  A certificate in heavy and highway construction will be awarded upon successful completion of the required six courses.

Students who successfully complete this certificate are eligible for eight (8) credits towards general electives in our bachelor's degree programs.

Successful applicants for admission should

Course Descriptions

THHC100 ESTIMATING & CONTRACTING
This course will teach students how unit price contracts work, why they are used, and how to estimate and manage unit price contracts. Students will learn by using actual unit price contract construction documents. 

THHC110 SURVEYING WITH CAD APPLICATIONS
This course presents theory and techniques of utilizing CAD, Total Stations and Data Collection applications for layout of highways, roads and utilities.

THHC120 EARTHWORK & PAVEMENTS
This course will provide basic information for highway construction and roadway maintenance, including both soils for embankments, roadway subgrades and drainage, asphalt pavement materials, new paving operations, rehabilitation of pavements by overlays and inspection and maintenance of pavements. 

THHC130 ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE, SITE SAFETY AND TRAFFIC CONTROLS
This course is to introduce students to techniques used, and the requirements for environmental compliance, site safety and traffic controls during construction of highways. 

THHC140 BRIDGE STRUCTURES
This course provides an introduction to bridge structures, types of highway bridges, bridge ratings, bridge construction and rehabilitation methods including materials and equipment used. The course will also examine recent bridge failures, causes and remedies including preventive maintenance programs. 

THHC150 EXCAVATION & MATERIAL HANDLING FOR HEAVY HIGHWAY CONTRACTS
This course is to provide students with a working knowledge of the equipment used in heavy & highway construction. The selection and application of heavy construction equipment including equipment productivity and cost will be addressed.
