Community Engagement

Since 2005, The Center for Community and Learning Partnerships has served as the facilitator of community engagement activities between the Wentworth Institute of Technology campus and community organizations throughout Boston. At Wentworth, community engagement involves projects and programs that build capacity and offer professional services that address neighborhood needs and solve community challenges as prioritized by community members.Through the Center, Wentworth aims to facilitate and strengthen “town/gown” relationships, giving everyone a voice and empowering residents to execute a vision for their environment. Wentworth students, staff, and faculty engage with the community through relevant hands-on projects that benefit all stakeholders. At the core of the definition of community engagement is the philosophy of focusing on assets and relationships as a means to producing reciprocal partnerships.

Wentworth engages with the surrounding communities of Mission Hill, Roxbury, and Fenway in various capacities and through many different channels. The biggest and most widespread example of this is the Community Work-Study Program. In 2012-2012, 124 students worked at 20 community organizations, serving not only members of our local communities, but of those all over Boston. Through programs like Community Work-Study, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), co+build, and Alternative Spring Break, Wentworth students are well positioned to greatly support and participate in the communities surrounding them. In order to secure these opportunities for students, the Center works with many nonprofit organizations with varying missions; from health to education, athletics to economic, housing to environment, as well as many youth oriented organizations.
