Jack Smith knows how to solve complex problems. His innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and visionary leadership led to a distinguished 40-year career in almost every aspect of the high-tech industry, from engineering and manufacturing to sales, marketing, and management.
A 1958 graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, Jack Smith is now using those same qualities that led to professional success to help solve an important challenge that many committed families are facing—how to fund their children’s educations. Because Jack and his wife, Lillian, believe in investing in the future of Wentworth and its students, they have generously made a gift of $500,000 to the Institute in the form of a scholarship. They promise to match this gift with an additional $500,000 if enough Wentworth alumni, family, friends, and supporters make gifts to Wentworth’s annual fund to achieve a 10 percent increase in donor participation.
Wentworth is building a culture of philanthropy, especially with regards to its annual fund. Currently, 5 percent of 36,000 alumni give to Wentworth, while at its peer schools, the annual giving participation rate among alumni is 40 percent. Within the last five years, gifts of $100 or less have totaled more than $500,000—underscoring the fact that every gift makes a difference.
Because Jack and Lillian feel so strongly about encouraging other individuals in the Wentworth community to give, they are leaving the rest up to you.
